Brussels Sprouts Long Island Planting Guide
Brussels Sprouts Long Island🌱
1. Choose a Planting Location:
Brussels sprouts prefer full sun to thrive 🌞. Choose a location with plenty of sunlight and good air circulation to prevent diseases.
2. Prepare the Soil:
These plants grow best in rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0) 🌾. Mix in plenty of compost or organic matter to enhance soil fertility and structure.
3. Planting Instructions:
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and space plants 18 inches apart 🌍. If planting in rows, space them 24-36 inches apart to allow for good airflow between plants.
4. Watering Requirements:
Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods 💧. Brussels sprouts require a lot of water during the growing season, particularly when forming the sprouts. Be sure to water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the leaves.
5. Germination Time:
Seeds typically germinate in 7-14 days ⏳. If growing in cooler temperatures, the process may take a bit longer.
6. Ongoing Care:
As the plants grow, remove yellowing leaves to encourage better air circulation. You may need to stake the plants to keep them upright. Regularly fertilize with a high-nitrogen fertilizer to support healthy growth 🌿.
