It gets its name because it is so easy to grow that even lazy people can successfully cultivate it. In addition to being low-maintenance. the lazy man watermelon is also resistant to diseases and pests. making it an ideal choice for farmers looking to maximize their yields. FAQ 01 When to Plant Watermelon Seeds 02 Where to Plant Watermelon Seeds Watermelons are heavy feeders and need soil rich in nutrients. They grow best in loose. well-drained. but moisture-retentive soil rich in organic matter. Amend your soil with aged manure. seaweed. and/or compost before planting. 03 How to Plant Watermelon Seeds Dig a hole 12" deep and 24" wide. fill with compost. manure. and several handfuls of sand. Use the soil that was removed from the hole to create the mound and then sow your seed or transplant there. Sow watermelon seeds 1" deep. planting 4-6 seeds (or transplanting 2-3 of your strongest seedlings) in mounds that stretch 24" across. If direct sowing. wait until seedlings have developed 3-4 true leaves and choose your strongest 2-3 plants by cutting the thinned out seedlings at soil level with scissors. Build mounds 5-10' apart. 04 How to Care for Watermelon Plants Avoid growing watermelon where night temperatures dip below 50 F; this will cause fruit to lose flavor. If temperatures exceed 90F for several days. flowers will drop without setting fruit. Watermelons require 70-90 frost-free days to reach harvest and will tolerate no frost. A soaker hose or drip irrigation is the best way to water. If you live in an area where the weather and soil are dry. try planting your watermelon in inverted hills rather than mounds. Regular. even watering will help fruits avoid blossom-end rot which is caused by fluctuation of soil moisture. Companion plants are corn. radish. beans. nasturtiums. marigolds and oregano. Bad companions are potatoes as they attract many of the same insects that feed on watermelon plants. 05 How to Harvest Watermelons Stop watering your watermelons about 10-14 days before the fruits are ready to harvest. this will concentrate the plant's sugars and your watermelon will be sweeter. You may want to place a board under each melon to keep the fruit clean and dry. Watermelons will be ready to harvest after 70-90 days from sowing. Daylily Hybrid Flowers Seed
Make Your Seed to Garden 1. Choose the right containers You can start seeds in almost any type of container. as long as it's at least 2-3 ” deep and has some drainage holes. If you love to DIY by yourself. you might start growing seedlings in yogurt cups. milk cartons or even a paper cup. 2. The “potting soil” Choose the potting soil that's made for growing seedlings. NOTE: Do not use soil from your garden or re-use potting soil from your houseplants. Start with a fresh. sterile mix that will ensure healthy. disease-free seedlings. 3. Planting Some of the small ones can be sprinkled right on the soil surface. Larger seeds will need to be buried. After planting seeds. you have to moisten the newly planted seeds. To speed up germination. cover the pots with wet paper or a plastic dome. This helps keep the seeds moist before they germinate. When you see the first signs of green. you have to remove the cover. 4. Watering. feeding. repeating As the seedlings grow up. you have to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Let the soil dry slightly between waterings. Remember to feed the seedlings regularly with liquid fertilizer. 5. Light Seeds need a lot of light. Set the lights on a timer for 15 hours a day. If you're growing in a window. choose a south-facing exposure. Rotate the pots regularly to keep plants from leaning into the light. If you're growing under lights. adjust them so they're just a few inches above the tops of the seedlings. Keep in mind that seedlings need darkness. too. so they can rest. As the seedlings grow taller. raise the lights. 6. Move to outdoors It's not a good idea to move your seedlings directly from the protected environment of your home into the garden. You've been coddling these seedlings for weeks. so they need a gradual transition to the great outdoors. About a week before you plan to set the seedlings into the garden. place them in a protected spot outdoors (partly shaded. out of the wind) for a few hours. bringing them in at night. Gradually. over the course of a week or 10 days. expose them to more and more sunshine and wind. A cold frame is a great place to harden off plants.

The fruit is excellent for making jam. or you can simply leave it out for the birds to enjoy. 🌳FEATURE🌳 •Morus nigra •Heirloom •Non-GMO •American grown seeds •Height: 15m •USDA Zones: 4-10 🌱Planting Instructions: Black mulberry trees are very fast growers that are not particular about soil type. They will grow in clay. loam or sandy soil. whether it be alkaline or acidic. They prefer full sun. but can grow in part shade. White mulberry cannot tolerate as much shade as the U.S native red mulberry though. Mulberry seeds are dormant and will need the cold of winter or a 60 day cold stratification. The easiest method is to simply soak the seeds and then sow the seeds in the fall just under the soil surface and let Mother Nature naturally wake them up for a spring germination. To sow at other times of the year. you will need a cold cycle (stratification) to mimic the winter. After the stratification. sow the seeds just under the soil surface and keep the soil moist. but not saturated. Keep the seeds at around 86°F during the day for 8 hours and 70° at night for 16 hours. This is easy to achieve with a heating grow mat. Once the seedlings have sprouted. move them to their own individual pots (4" or larger) being careful not to damage the roots. If there are still frost concerns. continue to use the grow light and heating mat. If there is no frost danger. you can move the pots outdoors to a sunny location. After a year. the seedlings will be large enough to be transplanted to their permanent location. 🌟🌟🌟Nutritional value of black mulberry 1. Sow 2-3 seeds per pot. Sow seeds 1 inch deep in seed-starting formula Keep the soil moist at 70 degrees F Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days As soon as seedlings emerge. provide plenty of light on a sunny windowsill or grow seedlings 3-4 inches beneath fluorescent plant lights turned on 16 hours per day. off for 8 hours at night. Raise the lights as the plants grow taller. Incandescent bulbs will not work for this process because they will get too hot. Most plants require a dark period to grow. do not leave lights on for 24 hours. Seedlings do not need much fertilizer. feed when they are 3-4 weeks old using a starter solution (half strength of a complete indoor houseplant food) according to manufacturer's directions. Thin to one plant per pot. Before planting in the garden. seedling plants need to be “hardened off”. Accustom young plants to outdoor conditions by moving them to a sheltered place outside for a week. Be sure to protect them from wind and hot sun at first. If frost threatens at night. cover or bring containers indoors. then take them out again in the morning. This hardening off process toughens the plant's cell structure and reduces transplant shock and scalding. 🏡Sowing Directly in the Garden Sow in fertile. warm soil after danger of frost has passed. Sow seeds 3 inches apart in groups of 4-6 in raised hills. Cover with 1 inch of fine soil and firm lightly. Space groups 5-7 feet apart each way. Keep evenly moist. Seedlings emerge in 7-10 days. Thin to 2 or 3 strongest seedlings in each group when they are 1-2 inches high. PLEASE NOTE: Seedless varieties do not produce pollen and therefore cannot pollinate themselves. A pollinator (seeded variety) is included to insure a good fruit harvest both seedless and the pollinator seed must be planted together. 🌟Tips Allow your melons to ripen on the vine. In general fruits are ripe when they smell aromatic and when stems start to crack and the fruit slips off easily with light pressure from your thumb. Generally. fruits are ripe when they smell fruity. Harvest cantaloupes when the fruits change from green to yellow or tan and they break away easily from the vine. Harvest winter melons when they turn the appropriate color and their blossom ends are soft. Honeydew melons are ripe when the skin turns to a creamy yellow color and the blossom end is slightly soft. To avoid damage cut the honeydew off the vine with sharp shears. Watermelons are ready to harvest when their undersides turn from white to a creamy yellow. The tendrils closest to the fruit will also turn brown and dry up and the skin will become dull and hard at harvest time. For best flavor eat at room temperature. Melons may be stored in the refrigerator for a short time. They will lose their flavor and color if stored too long. Cape Jasmine Seeds
